The North Star

THE NORTH STAR

Slavery still exists today.

And transportation hubs like airports are hotbeds for human trafficking, with millions of victims passing through every year.

Airports are often the last time a trafficking victim is seen, and their captors remain with them the entire time. They cannot verbally ask for help.

Introducing The North Star.

How it works.

RFID tags in the shape of the North Star will be available inside airport bathroom stalls on posters with information about trafficking. Individuals would be directed to place the tags anywhere on their body that is hidden from their captors – under a shirt, inside a pocket, etc.

When they pass TSA scanners, the North Star symbol will be visible to security and they can be safely escorted away. Basic RFID scanners could also be installed at gates, to expand the reach to bathrooms beyond the TSA checkpoint.

Why the North Star?

It’s not just an uncommon shape that will be easier to spot on TSA scanners. Individuals escaping slavery in the United States used the North Star as a guide to navigate their way toward freedom in the North. We feel that the symbol should continue to hold this meaning for victims of modern-day slavery.
